2013 Movies In Review
by David Blackwell
FAVORITES OF 2013-
GRAVITY (2013)- an intense 90 minutes that I saw
twice.
THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE- a great sequel
that is even better than the first film
OBLIVION- a great mix of visuals and music score
in a movie that reminds me of 1970s sci-fi
PACIFIC RIM- one of the best summer popcorn
movies
UPSTREAM COLOR- This is the second film from the
director of PRIMER and I suspect it is one of those movies that will reward
with repeat viewings
THE WORLD'S END- one of my summer fun gems
TURDS
OF
THE YEAR:
THE COUNSELOR (2013)- I wonder if the longer
extended cut will redeem this movie which has scenes of promise only to have
the rest be a mess that makes PROMETHEUS look like CITIZEN KANE.
GANGSTER SQUAD
47 RONIN- The trailers showed promise and the
poster used a tattooed skull guy who is only in the movie for one scene. Also
the movie would have been better without
the witchcraft and monsters part. It
should have been more like the vastly superior 13 ASSASSINS
MOVIE
I
WANT TO SEE THE SEQUEL TO:
MACHETE KILLS- The trailer for MACHETE KILLS
AGAIN IN SPACE shows a movie I want to see even more than the movie I just
watched.
BEST
APOCALYPSE NOW HOMAGES-
UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING- Jean-Claude
Vann Damme plays his best Colonel Kurtz impersonation in one of the strangest
UNIVERSAL SOLDIER sequels after the excellent UNIVERSAL SOLIDER: REGENERATION
HAMMER OF THE GODS- Apocalypse Now with Vikings
