2013 TV SHOWS IN REVIEW
By David Blackwell
THE AMERICANS-
AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN- This show continues to one up itself with
each season long anthology arc as each episode continues to throw one surprise
and shock after another. Best season of
AMERICAN HORROR STORY yet
ARROW- this DC universe series
develops the characters and
stories through great character development along with a mix of past and
present where the end of season 1 to the middle of season 2 chronicles Oliver
Queen’s change from the Hood to Arrow while introducing other Green Arrow
characters like Black Canary and some old Batman villains (like stealing a page
form BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES).
THE BLACKLIST- Two words to
describe why this show is great-
James Spader.
CONTINUUM- I like the approach
to this show with its plots
and how the actions in the past may affect Kiera’s future and the moments to
show she is pray to human failings in her quest to stop Liber8 while facing a
new enemy in rogue time travelers.
HEROES OF COSPLAY- Despite
SyFy’s behind-the-scenes problems
with the show, I really loved this behind-the-scenes reality show look at the
world of cosplayers and the convention circuit where cosplay people compete.
SLEEPY HOLLOW- I like how mythology
and the American
Revolution along with Revelations mix together in this fun update on the
Washington Irving tale. Tom Mison is the
best actor in this show as he bring humanity and humor to Ichabod Crane, a man
in a time not his own.
THE WALKING DEAD- The second
half of season 3 and first half
of Season 4continue to show a series at its greatest with great character arcs,
but the show did stumble a little at the start of season 4 before gaining steam
again with the Governor’s arc. Sometime
THE WALKING DEAD does move a little too slow like some of the zombies/ Walkers
on the show. The writers need to be
careful on how they drag out the story and get on with the plot.
HONORABLE MENTION:
ALMOST HUMAN
DRACULA
THE FOLLOWING
REIGN
TOMORROW PEOPLE- It
is a good companion to air after ARROW.
It is an interesting show as it focuses on the people with powers and
those who hunt them, but the school plots threaten to derail the series in one
episode.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINT OF THE YEAR-
MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.- Here is a show that could have been so much
more and used the wealth of mythology and characters from the comic books that
feature SHIELD, but unfortunately agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has turned into a
mostly dull procedural series with characters you don’t care about.
DISAPPOINTING SEASONS-
LOST GIRL Season 3
BEING HUMAN (USA)
ONCE UPON A TIME season 3
REVOLUTION Season 2
NEW SERIES THAT STRUGGLES TO
BE GREAT-
DEFIANCE- The pilot held so much promise before
stumbling into an average sci-fi show that was nothing special before gaining
its footing leading up to the season finale.
It is interesting this show is transmedia as there is also an online
gaming universe going on in a different place in the same universe at the same
time as the series.
SHOW THAT WILL BE MISSED-
NIKITA- this show
will be sadly missed and now I look forward to watch what I have missed from
the first three seasons as the CW saddled it with a bad timeslot (Friday nights
and sometime it was even against FRINGE which I also miss).
OTHER HSOW THAT WILL BE MISSED-
FRINGE- this show lasted for
five seasons thanks to support
from Fox and fans as Fox allowed the creative team to wrap up the show with a
final season of 13 episodes.
