BATMAN: YEAR ONE is an adaptation of the comic book storyline written by Frank Miller. It follows the early
beginnings of Lt. James Gordon and Batman in Gotham City. Gordon has transferred to Gotham and his wife is expecting
a kid. He thinks Gotham is a new start only to find the police force to be corrupt. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne
has returned from years abroad and becomes Batman (while making mistakes along the way).
BATMAN: YEAR ONE is like a Cliff Notes adpatation of the Frank Miller storyline. BATMAN BEGINS did a better adpatation
of the same storyline. The animation is good, but the short runtime makes the film seem way too short.
If they intended on such a short runtime, I wish they focused more on one character whether it was Gordon or Batman.
Trying to develop everyone including throwing in Catwoman makes it seem so disjointed.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
A short CATWOMAN is OK, but it isn't enough to really please me. Maybe it is time to give Catwoman her own animated
feature.
Sneak Peeks FOR JUSTICE LEAGUE: DOOM, ALL STAR SUPERMAN, and GREEN LANTERN: EMERALD KNIGHTS features interviews with
the crew and voice atcors involved in each animated project. Rounding out the extras are trailers for THUNDERCATS,
LOONEY TUNES PLATINUM COLLECTION, MAD, and YOUNG JUSTICE Season 1 Volume 1.
More extras are included on the two-disc DVD and the Blu-ray. They include featurettes focusing on BATMAN: YEAR
ONE and Frank Miller's comic work, and an audio commentary.
FINAL ANALYSIS: BATMAN: YEAR ONE was a bold failure which is hurt by being too short which makes it comes
off as disjointed. BATMAN BEGINS did a much better take on the same material in the BATMAN: YEAR ONE comic
book.
