Picking up five years after OUTRAGE, the sequel BEYOND
OUTRAGE (aka OUTRAGE BEYOND) shows anti-gang detective Kataoka manipulating the
yakuza so he can ignite a war between the Hanabishi and Sonna-kai Yakuza clans
and put Otomo (Takeshi Kitano) on a quest to settle scores with the leaders of
the Sonna-kai syndicate. Otomo is
serving time in prison and let out early and he first doesn’t want to settle
scores, but paranoia and Kataoka’s manipulation sets the clans and Otomo on a
collision course.
BEYOND OUTRAGE is a very clever and twisty sequel to OUTRAGE
which is another Kitano movie I love. No
one directs and makes a Yakuza movie like Kitano. BEYOND OUTRAGE shows a world
where the
corruption between the cops and yakuza.
Old guard vs. new guard of the crime syndicates as the Sanno-kai
syndicate changes where merit is more important than honor and seniority.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
An overlong 62 minute making-of
documentary called OUTRAGE
“FURTHER” BEYOND goes behind the scenes of making the sequel showing the
process of how Kitano directs and how the movie was made with behind-the-scenes
footage and interview clips mixed together in a sequel’s filming that was
delayed a year by a major Japanese earthquake.
The theatrical trailer isn’t included on the disc, but
previews for other Magnolia Entertainment releases are on the disc: THE LAST
DAYS ON MARS, HERE COMES THE DEVIL, HOW I LIVE NOW, and BIG BAD WOLVES.
FINAL ANALYSIS: I
can’t wait for the third OUTRAGE movie because the second is just as violent
and clever as the first one.
