MONSTERS is an incredible low budget sci-fi movie.  It relies on the journey of two people as they travel through an infected zone that is what keeps alien creatures out of the United States (and the rest of Mexico).   The huge creatures come out at night and are attracted to light.   A photographer is looking to get shots of these creatures.  His quest is complicated when he has to transport the daughter of his boss back to the USA.   MONSTERS is a journey of two people in a quiet and sometimes deadly landscape.   They get to know a little about each other as they take this voyage of discovery about themselves.     It makes the sci-fi elements a part of life and turns the focus on the two people.   That is why MONSTERS works.

MONSTERS was shot on a $800,000 budget and it was filmed with a small crew (and using non-actors as part of the scenes).   The film shot in locations without getting permission and it features many improvised scenes between the two leads. Without being held to a rigid script,  MONSTERS is like a free flowing movie.  The few special effects are part of the background while most scenes focus on what the photographer and the woman experience.   You see the world with them.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
Four deleted and extended scenes contain material cut from the film for pacing.   They are still good to watch, but I agree they would have slowed the film down. HDNet: A LOOK AT MONSTERS is a promotional featurette on the film.   More extensive making-of featurettes are included on the two disc DVD (a full making-of and an editing featurette among other things) and the Blu-ray.   Rounding out the extras are previews for other Magnolia titles and an audio commentary with Director Gareth Edwards, actors Scott McNairy and Whitney Able.

FINAL ANALYSIS:   MONSTERS is a fascinating Sci-fi film.  See this low budget film.  If you want to know more about the making of the film, get the two disc or the Blu-ray.
