MY GUN IS QUICK is one of the lesser
known films based on a MIKE HAMMER movie. Most people will site KISS ME DEADLY
or THE GIRL HUNTERS (where author Mickey Spillaine played the character he created, Mike Hammer). Still MY GUN IS QUICK is said to be closer to the cold removed feeling of the books and the character
of Mike Hammer. Mike Hammer is a macho guy in the way he treats men and
women. He is a little cold to the woman who cares for him, Velda. The movie starts with Mike finishing a case and befriending a girl in a diner at night. Soon he gives her cash to buy new clothes
and a bus ticket to get out of town. Hours later, his police buddy Detective
Pat Chambers calls him and Mike finds out the girl has been murdered. The
ring she was wearing is missing and Mike sets out to find her killer. He finds
himself wrapped up in jewels stolen in Europe
during World War 2.
MY GUN IS QUICK starts out slow only to
pick up pace. The best scene I can agree with others on is a wordless one where
Mike Hammer looks in through a second story window as he sees a police crime scene.
The rest of the movie just doesn't hold up against that one scene that is more electric than the rest of the film.
The transfer holds up well on regular TV
sets where it looks poor on the Blu-ray drive I also tested it on in my laptop.
The sound is clean. I do wish they created a better menu system and DVD art (which I know I could create better since I do have photo and graphic
design skills) Remember this is pressed on a DVD-R disc as part of MGM's Manufactured
On Demand program for MGM Limited Edition Collection. Also no extras to speak
of. I do hope they do better compression for films even though they do have a
disclaimer at the start of any MGM Limited Edition Collection that says the DVD uses the best prints available.
