In a world where legends and magic collide, Master
Gregory
(Jeff Bridges) recruits his newest apprentice (Thomas Ward as played by Ben
Barnes) who is the
seventh son of the seventh son to help fit Mother Malik (Julianne Moore) that
has escaped from her prison as she looks to enslave the world with her dark
army beginning at the height of the blood moon.
They are being watched by Alice- the daughter of one of the witches- who
finds her loyalty torn between her mother (who serves Mother Malik and her love
for Mr. Ward).
SEVENTH SON is a rather
generic fantasy movie that bombed at the box office where fleshing out the
story would have helped it out more.
The actors are OK in their roles with the material given them. I
just wonder why all dark witches can turn
into dragons and the whole Master Gregory subplot into his past is
underdeveloped (other than he was once in love with Mother Malik and all his
previous apprentices have died (with the last one you see getting killed). You
should just rent it and not buy it
because you may just forget about SEVENTH SON
after you watch it. You may want to
track down the novel (THE LAST APPRENTICE) which the movie is loosely based on
and if they followed the book, they might have been able to tap into the HARRY
POTTER audience.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
I wish they kept the alternate ending in the
movie while the
16 deleted and alternate scenes (almost 27 minutes total) include some material
they should have left in and other scenes where they were trying to decide how
to play certain scenes. You will only find the alternate ending and deleted/
alternate scenes on blu-ray.
THE MAKING OF SEVENTH SON:
DEFENDERS OF GOOD- a featurette on the good guys
of SEVENTH SON
RESURRECTING THE WICKED- a look at the various
villains of
SEVENTH SON
FORGING A MEDIEVAL REALM (blu-ray only)- production
design
of three important sets in the movie
THE LEGEND AND LORE OR
THE SEVENTH SON- looking at the various
legends around seventh son in the real world
VISUAL EFFECTS GALLERY that shows breakdowns
from four
sequences in he film.
Also included in this set is the movie in standard
definition on DVD and a code to download
and/ or stream a digital Ultraviolet copy of SEVENTH SON
FINAL ANALYSIS:
SVEENTH SON is a underdeveloped
generic fantasy movie which you should rent and maybe go read the book it is
loosely based on.
