Sarah is settled down
with her farmer husband Miguel for
better or for worse in New Mexico during the 19th century, but she
is driven over the edge by the ones who done her wrong and when she finds her
husband is murdered. She is out for
revenge while eccentric Sheriff Jackson hunts for the killer of two brothers
(one of them are married to the daughter of the New
Mexico governor).
They both cross paths with crazy religious zealot Prophet Josiah who is
looking to expand his Holy Land while he murders, rapes,
sleeps with his wives, and looks down on those of darker skin.
SWEETWATER has some great ideas
and characters in it, but it
feels like a story that could have been fleshed out a little more after all the
rewriting that Logan Miller and Noah Miller did. Ed Harris gives his all
as eccentric Sheriff
Cornelius Jackson while Jason Isaacs is possessed by the madness of the evil
murdering polygamous religious Prophet Josiah.
January Jones seems like a non-character at times as the former
prostitute Sarah who is settled down with her Hispanic husband Miguel no matter
how others mistreat them until Miguel is killed and she goes on a revenge spree
against all who done here wrong.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
THE MAKING OF SWEETWATER is
a 10 ½ minute promotional
featurette that has interviews with the cast and brothers Logan and Noah Miller
(who cameo as the brothers killed by Josiah at the beginning of the film). The
cast talk about the film and what
attracted them to the film in addition to Ed Harris praising the Miller
brothers for their work ethic.
“COLD GREY LIGHT OF DAWN”
by Hudson Moore is the audio for
the song heard during the movie without being a proper music video.
Also included on the DVD are
the theatrical trailer and
previews for BOUNTY KILLER and THE STARVING GAMES.
FINAL ANALYSIS:
SWEETWATER has fantastic performances by Ed Harris and Jason Isaacs in
addition to some great cinematography shots, but this Western feels like a
skeleton that is missing some meat to it to make a really fully developed
movie.
