Javier wants to follow in the footsteps
of his father who was the happy Clown. Cruel events like the Spanish civil war
and a bold escape attempt by Javier to rescue his father results in his father getting killed.
He becomes the Sad Clown because he only knows tragedy. He becomes wrapped
up in a love triangle between the abusive Happy Clown Sergio and the beautiful acrobat (and abused wife of Sergio) Natalia. Events spiral out of control which leave them all scarred in many ways as Javier
tries to rescue Natalia.
THE LAST CIRCUS is a mad and visually brilliant
tragedy from director Alex de la Iglesia. It is like a film that would
result if Tim Burton and David Lynch combined themselves into one person. The
film reaches insane levels as you witness a battle between a sad clown and a happy clown. The movie is full of
crazy images from surreal dream sequences to absurd moments like an army of clowns attacking Franco's soldiers to odd circus
performers who could easily be part of their own film. It is a nice touch that the film has a night club called
Kojaks. THE LAST CIRCUS could easily fit in the same universe of the Guillermo del Toro films. I have
only seen very few films from director Alex de la Iglesia, but it reaffirms my need to see some of his other films.
