The show has been over since 2010
in the UK
and finally season 7 from 2008 is making its debut on DVD in the USA. The show hasn’t received much in the way of support from BBC America sadly after
the first few seasons where only new episodes are seen through PBS stations and DVD.
I wish the BBC would pick up the release schedule for WAKING THE DEAD instead of just releasing one season per year. They still have two more seasons and one season of a spin-off to release in North
America.
The writing for the Cold Case Unit of DSI
Boyd, Stella Goodman, Spence, Dr. Grace Foley, and forensics expert Eve is spot on, but I didn’t relay like to see Boyd
mope around as he is trying to reconnect with his junkie son Luke who has reappeared.
I like Boyd as a brilliant investigator who is sometimes reckless and has anger management issues. I just didn’t like to see Boyd being somewhat distracted through the season of six stories. The Luke Boyd story was a little drug out.
The stories are good with strong outings like MISSING PERSONS and PIETA where some of the other stories have their
high and low points with the weakest story being WOUNDS which seems to run out of energy during the second part. DUTY AND HONOR has a disclaimer at the beginning of both parts due to the coincidence that one of the characters
in the story who runs a security firm shares the same name with a real life person who also works at a security firm. I just hope that the next two seasons are stronger than season 7 which I feel
is the weakest of the series so far.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
No extras except trailer for other BBC
productions that play after the disc loads before you get to the main menu. Trailers
included are for RIPPER STREET and SPIES OF WARSAW in addition to the
annoying BBC America commercial with the police bobby.
FINAL ANALYSIS: The characters are still sharply written even though some of the writing isn’t as good for the main
stories as it has been for previous seasons. The only other thing I didn’t
like is mopey Boyd because I rather see him just as a little irrational at time and have anger management issues. I just hope the BBC releases one more season to DVD this year instead of having to wait until next year
for season 8.
