Jan Dong Gun is Yang, an assassin who rejects
the ways of his clan, The Sad Flutes, and spare the life of a baby from a rival clan.
This makes him the top target of his clan as they want him and the baby dead no matter who gets in the way. Yang flees to the American Old west where he makes friends with a variety of people and circus folk
in a rundown town in the middle of the desert which is terrorized by the colonel and his marauders.
THE WARRIOR'S WAY is a quirky action film
which combines films from the east and the west. The action and martial
arts soar high in a very stylized Western as done by an Asian director with characterization filtered through the way you
see them in European and Asian films. It has humor and shows Yang learning
to value things other than being strong and having friends. THE WARRIOR'S
WAY makes you care for the characters. The film was shot mostly in front of green
screens which allows director Sngmoo Lee to create a stylized Old West town the way he wants it. The film focuses on Yang as he tries to find a new life and his growing friendship/ attraction to
Lynne who wants to know how to use the knife and the sword so she can get revenge against the Colonel.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
13 deleted scenes feature many scenes cut
for time while I wish many of the last half of the scenes were still in the film including part of an alternate ending that
picks up years later with the desert American town. A two and half
minute Behind-The Scenes montage is very condensed as it combines behind-the-scenes footage and interviews without becoming
promotional fluff. I wish that montage was longer and an actual longer
making-of featurette or two.
FINAL ANALYSIS: THE WARRIOR'S WAY is a fun and quirky stylized action western.
The deleted scenes are the big extra while I wish they went more into the making of the movie.
