WE ARE THE NIGHT is a darker modern day take on Carmila. Director Dennis Gansel takes it as inspiration for
his modern film about a group of female vampires who kill, dance, seduce, and party in 21st century Berlin, Germany.
It combines the downside of imortality with the reckless freedom would have with immortality. WE ARE THE NIGHT is a
pop music vampire action cocktail about female vampire living life on their own terms.
Lena is a petty criminal who runs across Louise (the leader of our vampire group) at a night club the three vampires (Louise,
Charlotte, and Nora) run. Louise think Lena could be the answer to the next person she could spend the next century
with. She already became bore of Charlotte (a former 1920s silent movie film star) and nora (a 1990s party girl).
Louise bites Lena and Lena goes home to find herself changing the next day. She tracks down the group to find
what Louise has down to her. After a trip into the darker side of her new life, Lena finds herself transformed and tries
to embrace he rnew life as a vampire. The two problems she has are that she will not kill and she becomes attracted
to a dettective named Tom (who tried to arrest Lena not long ago). The careless abandon of the vampire life starts
to come crashing down around them as Lena tries to survive in a new life she was forced into.
WE ARE THE NIGHT is a female take on the vampire mythos. I do like how the transformation gets rid of the artifical
like hair coloring, tattoos, and piercings. The thing I didn't like the inability for people to see them in the mirrors
and on video (I wish they would do away with this tired Hollywood cliche on vampires). It is a layered vampire
film with character development for the vampire women. It all comes down crashing in tragedy and not before you see
them have fun in sveral pop music montage scenes. I do wish we could have seen even more action in WE ARE
THE NIGHT as the film does what it can to create its world. WE ARE THE NIGHT is a vampire coktail for the pop
culture set of the early 21st century.
AUDIO:
The DVD has two language tracks. The original German track on the copy I rented was a bad mix- I heard the music
and the dialogue was so low. The english dubbed tracked is easy to hear and it is properly mixed. Even to
my surprise, the dubbed track is pretty good as they manage to sync the dubbed voice actors with the lips of the german actors.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
The extras amount to over 18 minutes of interviews with cast and crew, under seven minutes of behind-the-scenes footage,
and the US theatrical trailer. What is missing from the disc are the two alternate endings shot for the film and
the international theatrical trailers.
FINAL ANALYSIS: WE ARE THE NIGHT is a an entertainingly flawed flashy gem from Germany. It will appeal
to some vampire fans who liked THE LOST BOYS, THE FORSAKEN, and UNDERWORLD films.
