IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is the last classic movie John Carpenter made as a director. The movies he made after this one don't
match up with John Carpenter classics like HALLOWEEN, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE THING, STARMAN, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA,
PRINCE OF DARKNESS, and THEY LIVE. IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is the third of Carpenter thematic Apocalypse trilogy with THE
THING and THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS being the other two in the trilogy. It is a movie inspired by H.P. Lovecraft. I still
love the movie now as I did when I watched it on VHS back in 1995.
Private investigator John Trent (Sam Neill) is hired to find missing author Sutter Cane (Jurgen Prochnow) and deliver
his new book IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS. Arcane's publisher (Charlton Heston) has made lots of money off of Cane's books which
are even more popular than Stephen King. Trent thinks there is some scam behind all of this disappearance, but he soon learns
there are more horrifying things that want to break into reality as he and Cane's editor (Julie Carmen) end up in the fictional
town of Hobb's End which only exist in Cane's books.
If you're a fan of H.P. Lovecraft or Stephen King, IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is a treat for you to watch. Fans of some
of John Carpenter's earlier films should give this movie a go or another go (if they saw it years ago). Despite being made
for around $8 million, the locations, creature design, and production design help add to the horror and psychological terror
of the movie. It makes you wonder if a book or books can cross reality if enough people read it and believe in it. The
movie uses the flashback structure to tell the tale of how John Trent ended up in a mental institution.

FINAL ANALYSIS: IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is John Carpenter's last classic movie. It is a great horror movie and a must
for fans of H.P. Lovecraft. Scream Factory has put together a great blu-ray, but I wish they could have dragged up some deleted
scenes which were known to exist in various workprints of the movie.
