93 year-old Sherlock Holmes (Ian McKellan) has
been living
in retirement tending his bees for over the last 30 years. The housekeeper’s
son, Roger, inspires him
to write and remember his last case along with solving a couple of other
mysteries of on why Sherlock was invited to Japan (he was looking for prickly
ash to help cure his senility that royal jelly from bees wasn’t making much
progress on) and why his bees are dying off.
MR. HOLMES is an alternate take on what happened
to Sherlock
Holmes in his retirement years in a universe where he is real and Dr. Watson
wrote embellished fictionalized tales about Sherlock cases and Sherlock is a
celebrity wanting to write his own book about his last case to set the record
straight as he is also trying to crack the mysteries of his own mind as he is
forgetting his past where he want his logic to help him solve it. He discovers
he may still be able to deduce
and solve cases no matter how old and forgetful he has become. Ian McKellan
is wonderful in the role of a
retired Sherlock Holmes and it is an interesting character portrait through what
others may perceive him as, who the man really is, and the man he is trying to
remember. It would have been great to
look through the eye of a murder mystery, but the mysteries Holmes tackles in
the movie are just as compelling. This
is a must see for fans of Sherlock Holmes and Ian McKellan.

as it presents the detective through a different light of memory and trying to
