SPECIES was a decent film and SPECIES II had it's moments. SPECIES II sucked really bad. SPECIES: THE WAWAKENING is better than the third entry. Still the series has fallen hard as it substitutes gore and nudity for a good plot. A few ideas do float around in the film only to be discarded for gore and nudity. SPECIES: THE AWAKENING follows Miranda (Swedish actress Helena Mattsson) who finds out she is an alien human hybrid when something goes wrong with her. Her scientist uncle (Ben Cross) helped to create her and he takes her to Mexico to get help from his ex-partner Forbes (Dominic Keating).

What follows is a series of beautiful women showing their assests, a few deaths (before Mexico and in Mexico), and two fine genre actors (Cross, Keating) who need better material. So far SPECIES: THE AWAKENING (like SPECIES III) proves that the first two films had all that there was to say about the mythology of the series. If MGM wants to make more in the series, I suggest they hire good writers to write some great scripts instead of turning out B-movie crap with gore and nudity. I enjoyed the three beautiful women who feature in this sequel, but the script should have been destroyed by Sil or even have SPECIES artist H.R. Giger take a match to it. It is that bad. It is only slightly entertaining, but I think you have a better evening checking out the SPECIES Collector's Edition to see how great the first film was (expect a DVD Review of the SPECIES CE a little later this week).
