Sylvester McCoy's first year as the Seventh Doctor is a horrible season compared to Season 25 and Season 26 which hold up
after all these years, but Season 24 has aged poorly compared to the better written seasons from Classic DOCTOR WHO. Usually
the first story of a new Doctor is rough, but this whole season is terrible despite it featuring the debut of Ace (Sophie
Aldred) and the return of the Rani (Kate Mara) (and some will probably applaud that Mel (Bonnie Langford) left in this season-
however I think bad writing of her character is too blame for that). THE TRIAL OF A TIME LORD season (Season 23) is vastly
superior to McCoy's first season. Thankfully, it gets better with his other two seasons. Sylvester McCoy's first season
is where he is finding his footing as the Doctor, but the next two seasons bring forth the dark and mysterious Doctor. I
know the BBC had to release this season, but I rather had another Peter Davison season instead (Season 20 please). Season
24 is the worst season of Classic DOCTOR WHO and everything is uphill from here with the other DOCTOR WHO releases to come.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
Lots of legacy extras from the old DVDs in addition to plenty great new content produced for this set.
DISC 1 has the most all new archival material never before released for a DOCTOR WHO disc release.
Each story has a video reaction called BEIND THE SOFA with classic DOCTOR WHO actors Sylvester McCoy and Bonnie Langford
and Sophie Aldred, Colin Baker and Michael Jayston, Janet Fielding and Sarah Sutton.
Each story has a making-of documentary where DELTA AND THE BANNERMAN (Disc Five) has a new making-of documentary with
cast and crew as they recount the making of the story on location.
A new DOCTOR'S TABLE is featured on Disc three with Sylvester McCoy, Bonnie Langford, Sophie Aldred, and Clive Morrison
The last two major new content created for this blu-ray release is on Disc Eight:
IN CONVERSATION WITH SYLVESTER McCOY- and interview conducted by Matthew Sweet as Sylvester talks about his career before
and after being the doctor including stories about his time on DOCTOR WHO
HERE'S TO THE FUTURE- a retrospective documentary on Season 24
FINAL ANALYSIS: I'm not a fan of Sylvester McCoy's first season as the Doctor, but the following two seasons are great.
At least the extras and presentation on this blu-ray set are fantastic.
