I liked SCREAMERS, an underrated sci-fi film starring Peter Weller (before he went to direct TV shows and movies in addition
to teaching history). Now over ten years later, a direct to DVD sequel has been made. SCREAMERS: THE HUNTING
has decent production values. It is entertaining for about ninety minutes despite a fe minor nitpicks with the
plot (the ending, Lance Henrikson's character only being in the film for 10 minutes, and whatever happened to the guy who
sent the distress signal).
SCREAMERS: THE HUNTING picks up several years after the first one. A rescue team is sent to Sirus 6B after receivinga
distress signal. The Alliance created the robotic screamers several years ago when they had a civil war with the
workers. The only problem is the screamers evolved to look like humans. The greed of one of the rescue team
leads to the screamers in the big screamer factory to be awakened. Also the team has only six days to rescue any survivors
before a class 10 mallagenic storm hits the planet (and kills all life). Gina Holden plays the lead who has a
personal interest in the mission (it ties back to the first film). The sequel has plenty of gore, but I wish more
of the human screamers came into play like the first one (I love the wounded screamers and kid screamers from the first one).
SPECIAL FEATURES: Over 15 trailers and a 24 minute making of featurette are the only extras. The
featurette goes behind-the-scenes of the sequel inclduing the story, casting, locations, and the visual effects work.
FINAL ANALYSIS: SCREAMERS: THE HUNTING is a well-produced sequel that should ahve a better title (even SCREAMERS
2 sounds better).
