The second half of the first season of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA improves on the first half. While the Cold War plots
are still there, but the sci-fi element increases. Guest stars for the second half of season one include Leslie Neilson (THE
CREATURE), Robert Duvall (THE INVADERS), and George Sanders (THE TRAITOR). Stand out episodes include THE TRAITOR, DOOMSDAY,
and THE SABOTEUR. They haven't improved their security on the Seaview as the ship continues to get sabotaged in several episodes.
Too bad they didn't get to see a certain infamous monster in one episode. The cast really comes together even though the invisible
tracking spray bit in THE TRAITOR had me rolling my eyes. Now I can't wait for season 2 to make it's way to DVD. So far it
is better than LOST IN SPACE or PLANET OF THE GIANTS and at least as good as THE TIME TUNNEL.
VIDEO: 1.33:1 (Full Frame)
The gray values are nice. The transfers are really fantastic. they hold up to the previous volume. The episodes are black
and white, but season two on will be in color.
AUDIO: English 2.0 Stereo, English Mono, Spanish Mono
Subtitles: English, Spanish
I like the stereo track over the mono track. Dialogue, sounds, and music come in clearly. I didn't hear any background
hiss.
SPECIAL FEATURES: On Side B of Disc 3 are a still gallery of covers for the VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA comic book,
four David Hedison interviews (how he got the part because Irwin Allen kept asking him to play it despite Hedison kept turning the
role down, the first year, Richard bashart, and the blooper reel), and the blooper reel that David Hedison mentions in
the interviews where David Hedison and Richard Basehart both swear at least once (uncensored). The small amount of space
the extras take would have made me happier if they fit them on side A and made that a DVD-9 instead of DVD-14s which the set
are made.
FINAL ANALYSIS: Volume 2 proves Season 1 of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA wasn't that bad. The few extras on disc 3 also
make it worthwhile checking out for fans. Just go and buy it if you're fan and it is better than SEAQUEST DSV.
