WAKING THE DEAD SEason 6
review by David Blackwell
WREN BOYS is kinda like a Celtic Fight Club story that involves illegal fighting, a construction company, a nun, and two
lovers. Stella is a stand out character as she objects to removing articles from a shrine. A little conflict between her
and boyd. She does the job reluctantly.
DUES EX MACHINA knows how to intertwine plots. One involves the team's search for a 19th century skull (supposedly belonging
to some leader known as the Mahdi) taken out of Africa by a British order (the Fakirs) and the death of an Iraqi refugee 20
years ago. The two cases are connected. Is Boyd being used to uncover secret tortures to detroy his career? Will the recovery
of the Mahdi's skull mean peace for an African nation? Interesting ethical questions abound in this episode. Definitely
one of the best of the series.
THE FALL will be reviewed soon. I haven't watched this episode at this time.
MASK OF SANITY follows a black man (James Jensen) released from a psychriatric hospital and the cold case unit wonder
if he is still a danger as they investigate three deaths the guy was accused of (but couldn't stand trail for). James is
an unstable man who had a tough childhood. I love the use of flashbacks to flesh out Jensen.
DOUBLE BLIND starts witha body dug up in a graden. It connects to two brothers (one escapes from a mental hospital and
starts taking LSD) and alternative therapy involving LSD in the 1960s. I did call the twist at the end from miles away.
Still DOUBLE BLIND is another great episode. The Boyd and Grace conflict does feel a little forced.
YAHRZIET features Michelle Forbes as a guest star. She gets around as the clues linked to Mel during the entire season
reveal a cold case Mel was working involving Nazis who escaped Poland in 1945. It is wonderful to see Mel touch the team
in some way from beyond the grave. Also boyd in love is great. I hope Boyd's new love interest, Sarah (Forbes), will return
in the future.
Season 6 wasn't as good as season 5, but it does have great character moments in each episode. The actors energize the
cold case unit like in previous seasons. They aren't burned out yet in playing the roles. Season 7 is currently filming.
