ANALYSIS:
X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE tells the back story of how Logan and his brother Victor
fought side by side in several wars before their morals divided them. Logan sought
to hide and live his life with Silverfox. However, Victor starts
killing off mutants and a certain death brings Logan into the Weapon X program
where he gets his tough skeleton and his name of Wolverine. He is out for
revenge against his brother Victor.
Garth Franklin, writer and web master
of the Dark Horizons web site, said “This is the best they could come up with?!” when he talked about the Wolverine
film when he reviewed it. I agree with him.
The actors do as much as they can with the material that is given them. The
action sequences are great (Wolverine getting his adamantium claws and
the helicopter chase sequence). The big problem is the script isn’t
that fleshed out. Sometimes it feels like an outline that could need some meat
to it. The characters don’t have very well developed stories. 100 minutes and even a scene at the end of the credits don’t make enough time to tell a story
worthy of Wolverine given the rich back story this character has in 35 plus years of stories.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
Two audio commentaries were recorded for the film-
the first with Director Gavin Hood and the second with Producers Lauren Shuler
Donner and Ralph Winter.
THE ROOTS OF WOLVERINE: A CONVERSATION WITH STAN LEE AND LEN WEIN has the two
talk about the origins of the X-Men and Wolverine in addition to their popularity (and other people writing the characters).
WOLVERINE UNLEASHED: THE COMPLETE ORIGINS is a brief ten minute look into the
making of the film.
Rounding out the extras on disc one are four deleted scenes (including the
bar scene which I saw at the end of the credits instead of the inferior Deadpool teaser). Too bad Fox didn't include
the theatrical trailer on this DVD. Disc 2 has a digital copy of the film.
FINAL ANALYSIS: The 2-Disc Special Edition has a few extras, but
I wish the extras were more and hopefully the sequel will be better than the lackluster effort that was made.
